Koi Carp t-shirt No.174: Koi simply means carp in Japanese. So saying Koi Carp is really a bit daft. Either way, koi is also a homophone for another word that means "affection" or "love". This along, with the koi's perceived strength for swimming up stream in the strong spring river flow, are the reasons for their extensive use in tattoo design.
